The dining table is the heart of the home, a place where family and friends come together to connect. But in today’s busy world, mealtimes are often rushed, distracted, or skipped altogether.

Food writer and cook Melissa Hemsley knows just how powerful the ritual of eating together can be. Growing up, she experienced mealtimes as more than just food; they were about togetherness and community.

She recalls late-night dinners with her army dad, where even ten minutes together in pyjamas felt grounding. Fridays in her childhood home were filled with her mum’s friends cooking together, sharing laughter, and making sure no one left empty-handed. These moments taught her that the table is about connection first, and what’s on the plate second.

With that spirit in mind, Melissa shares five simple, practical tips to help you create calmer, more meaningful mealtimes.

1. Get everyone involved from the start

Source: Melissa Hemsley

“The ritual begins before anyone sits down, from laying the table to putting out some simple nibbles like chopped veggies and a dip. When everyone plays a small part, it turns the meal into something lovely you’ve created together, rather than a job that falls to one person. I always say busy hands make for happy hearts, and when people are chopping, pouring, or carrying plates, they’re already engaging and preparing to spend time together.”

2. Make a family meal plan

A larder-kitchen diner furniture-open plan living-wooden larder storing food and drink-shelves with crockery-cook books-house plant-wooden chair

Romsey larder | @countrysidecottagediary

“Once a week, sit down as a family and sketch out a rough meal plan. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just ideas everyone can pitch in on. It helps with budgeting, reduces stress after a long day, and makes everyone feel invested in what’s coming to the table. When people have had a say in what’s being cooked, they’re more likely to look forward to it and enjoy eating it together.”

3. Create a calming dining environment

Bentley dining table | Bentley bench | Kingham chairs | Belgrave display cabinet

“Phones, laptops, even the dog begging under the table can all distract from what should be your moment to connect. Instead of strict bans that can cause more stress, gently set things aside and focus on creating a pleasant atmosphere. Play some gentle music, light a candle, or simply clear away the day’s clutter. A calmer table makes for happier conversation, and even better digestion.”

4. Cook once, eat twice

Source: Melissa Hemsley

“Plan meals that roll over into the next day, a curry that tastes even better reheated, or a big pot of sauce that can become pasta one night and a pie filling the next. I call these ‘leftovers on purpose’. They don’t just save money, they make life easier. After all, who doesn’t love less faff in the kitchen after a long day? Knowing you’ve got something delicious ready to go makes you more likely to sit down together again, rather than grabbing something separately or skipping dinner altogether.”

5. Eat a little earlier

A dining table, chairs, and dresser-dining room furniture-vintage patterned rug-pale oak dining table-upholstered dining chairs-large blue dresser-colourful tablescape-fruit-checkerboard napkins-twisted candles-neutral table runner-fresh flowers

Oaklee dining table | Otis chairs | Richmond dresser

“Bringing mealtimes forward, even slightly, means everyone arrives at the table with more energy and time to unwind afterwards. It’s about flexibility and finding the time that works for your family’s stage of life, but eating earlier can make the evening feel calmer and less rushed.”

Melissa’s stories remind us that mealtimes are about more than food; they’re about connection, comfort, and community. By creating small rituals, planning ahead, and making your dining space inviting, you can turn everyday meals into meaningful moments.

At Oak Furnitureland, we design dining tables and chairs built for real life, from midweek suppers to big Sunday gatherings. Because when the table feels special, the moments around it do too.

When it comes to clever furniture solutions, sofa beds are true unsung heroes. Far from the outdated myths of being bulky or uninviting, today’s designs are stylish, practical, and incredibly comfortable.

In smaller homes, multi-use rooms, or compact flats and apartments, furniture that serves double-duty can make all the difference. Our high-quality, well-designed sofa beds are a secret weapon in your space-saving mission. They can comfortably seat guests while you’re entertaining, and with our top tips, can magically transform your guest bedroom into an inviting and welcoming space, without taking up a permanent position.

No extra room? No problem

Nap sofa bed

Not everyone has the space for a spare room to accommodate a separate guest suite. If you live in a one-bedroom flat, studio, or small bungalow, clever planning means that you don’t have to turn down friends’ or family members’ requests to stay the night.

A two seater sofa bed like the Eastley design is ideal for small spaces. It looks modern and stylish during the day and easily transitions into a comfortable sleeping spot by night.

For those who love to stretch out and relax, the Eastley chaise sofa bed is a brilliant choice. Combining comfort, storage, and practicality, it’s a versatile must-have for any modern home. This spacious corner sofa bed is designed with real life in mind, offering a hidden storage compartment beneath the chaise section, perfect for neatly tucking away extra blankets, bedding, or cushions.

Thanks to its easy two-fold mechanism, it smoothly transforms into a comfy bed, complete with a 10cm deep foam mattress to ensure guests enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

For a quick privacy solution, a stylish folding screen can create a bedroom-like feel and conveniently folds away when not needed.

Make the most of multi-use spaces

Wondering what to do if your home’s extra rooms are dedicated to other purposes, like a home office or children’s playroom? No problem! You don’t have to give up your space when guests arrive. With compact, multipurpose furniture like the Inca sofa bed or an armchair sofa bed, you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

And don’t forget the accessories

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Using stylish blanket boxes as a coffee table alternative offers a clever way to hide extra bedding. And that nest of tables beside your sofa bed? It can double up as a handy bedside table for overnight guests.

For family stays, you can create a welcoming, stylish, guest-ready home without sacrificing your living space. Whether you opt for a 3 seater sofa bed for larger spaces or a sofa bed chair for tighter corners, there’s a solution for every need.

A coffee table is more than just a functional piece of furniture — it anchors your living room, bringing stylish practicality to your space. Whether you’re hosting guests, enjoying a quiet morning coffee, or simply unwinding after a long day, a well-chosen coffee table serves as the perfect surface for drinks, snacks, and decor.

Beyond aesthetics, many modern designs feature built-in storage, such as drawers and shelves, helping you keep everyday clutter neatly tucked away. From sleek Japandi designs to more generous, rustic styles, the right coffee table can enhance your room’s ambience while offering the convenience you need for daily living.

If you need help incorporating these pieces into your existing decor, read on for plenty of inspiration.

Getting started

A coffee table and sofa-living room furniture-warm wooden coffee table with drawers-green velvet chaise corner sofa-patterned cushions-oversized ornate mirror-floral patterned rug

Original Rustic coffee table | @my_barratt_mey

Choosing the right coffee table starts with understanding your personal style, your storage needs, and how it fits into your overall living room design. Is your aesthetic cottagecore and cosy, sleek and modern, or a bold mix of eclectic elements? Defining your base style will guide your selection, ensuring your coffee table enhances and complements your space.

To bring your vision to life, consider creating a mood board on Pinterest. Collect images of coffee tables, living room layouts, and interior styles that inspire you. This will help you visualise how different shapes, materials, and finishes work together, making it easier to find a table that not only looks amazing but also feels like a natural extension of your home.

In the round

A sofa, coffee table, and TV unit-living room furniture-textured neutral rug-pale oak coffee table-cream sofa-neutral TV unit-clever storage-exposed brick walls-cream draped curtains

Halo coffee table | Malvern sofa | Maze rug

Practical and stylish, a round coffee table or a nesting coffee table is a great choice if you need flexible furniture that adapts to your space. The circular design of our Halo coffee table is both aesthetically pleasing and functional, with a spacious shelf for stacking books and magazines neatly together.

The perfect match

For a seamless and stylish living space, consider choosing coffee tables and other furniture pieces from the same or a complementary range. A well-coordinated look helps create visual harmony, making your room feel intentional and thoughtfully designed.

Start by selecting a coffee table that complements your existing furniture in terms of material, colour, and design. If you already have wooden pieces, choose a coffee table in a similar wood tone or finish to tie everything together effortlessly.

Scandi saviour

Minimalist Scandinavian style remains a timeless design choice that works beautifully in both contemporary and traditional homes. When styling modern pieces, opt for architectural and decorative accessories in a neutral colour palette to bring this look to life. If space is a bit tight, the Scandi-inspired Durham range offers the perfect small living room coffee table.

French farmhouse style

Style tips

Once you’ve chosen your coffee table, simple touches can effortlessly elevate its impact in your space. A ceramic bowl, a pretty branch or bunch of blooms, and a stack of books or magazines are easy, affordable ways to add interest. Follow these hints to experiment with styling and make the most of your space…

Follow the rule of three:

Objects arranged in odd numbers tend to be more visually appealing.

Add a mixture of heights:

Try introducing plants, accessories, and books of varying sizes to create visual interest and draw the eye to different levels.

If you don’t have space for a coffee table, a footstool offers a versatile solution, providing both ad-hoc seating and a surface for drinks and snacks — just add a tray on top! Opt for textured upholstery, like that featured in our Malvern sofa and coordinating footstool in beige fabric, to create a serene and stylish room scheme.

Virginia Wolfe famously declared in A Room of One’s Own that we should all have our own dressing room. While we may not have the luxury of an entire dressing room in our homes, there’s nearly always a little bit of space where you can have a dressing table. If you’re considering adding one to your home, here are our top tips for making the most of what will become your favourite little sanctuary.

Dressing table styles

Burleigh dressing table | Isobel chair

First, you’ll need to invest in a dressing table. There are so many different styles from rustic and vintage, to contemporary, mid-century and glamorous – so take cues from the rest of your home to decide what style you love and the size that works best for your space. Curvy shapes evoke a more feminine feel while darker, retro styles can create a striking contrast.

Where should a dressing table be placed?

Parquet console table | @new_build_forever_home

The natural home for a dressing table is in your bedroom. When deciding where to place it, consider how you’ll use it. You’ll want as much natural light as possible for this area, so aim to position it in front of a window to maximise the light for applying make-up. If that’s not an option, positioning it across from a window and using a mirror will reflect the light behind you onto your face.

What should be on a dressing table?

Newton dressing table | Newton chest of drawers | @no14hectorshouse

Essentially, anything you use to pamper yourself, any accessories you like adding as final touches to an outfit, and your most-used make-up items. You’ll definitely need a mirror, and maybe a hairbrush, but ultimately, a dressing table should be a place for your indulgence, so it’s entirely up to you!

How to declutter a dressing table

Wren dressing table | @sweethouseliving

It can be so easy to pile everything onto your dressing table and use it as a dumping ground but try to resist the temptation. Keep the surface relatively clear to give yourself plenty of space to use your make-up and pampering products. Decluttering a dressing table is all about having a clear system for organisinging your accessories through clever storage ideas.

Dressing table organiser

Parquet desk | @homeonkellslane

On top of your dressing table, consider practical storage options for your make-up, creams, or beauty supplies. Try acrylic storage which allows you to easily see what’s inside each section at a glance. After all, no one wants to spend 10 minutes searching for their favourite lippy when they’re in a hurry. With so many dressing table organisers out there, simply browse online to find the one that’s right for you and your style.

Dressing tables with drawers

Richmond dressing table | Richmond bedside table

Many dressing tables have built-in drawers for your cosmetic and skincare supplies. There’s a huge variety of styles of dressing tables and the amount of storage varies, so it’s worth considering what kind of items you’ll need to store and what size you’ll need the drawers to be. If you’ve got lots of make-up, consider getting drawer dividers to help you keep everything organised.

Dressing table finishing touches

Otto dressing table | Scroll-back chair

So now your dressing table is beautifully organised, how do you make it a wonderful space for relaxing and pampering yourself? Here are some ideas to help.

Get some stylish seating

A dressing table and chair-bedroom furniture-burgundy walls-cream lamp-dark wooden dressing table-upholstered chair-wall panelling-pink curtain-jute rug
Oliver console table | Isla chair

A seat that’s both stylish and comfy to sit on is a must at a dressing table, whether it takes you mere moments or hours to get ready. You’ll want something with a padded or cushioned seat for the most luxurious touch. Small benches and stools are also popular choices, as they can be neatly tucked away under your dressing table when not in use.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

Hove dressing table | @hunt.homedecor

No dressing table is complete without a beautiful mirror. Bigger is normally better when it comes to checking out your outfit, but for close-up skincare routines, you’ll want something smaller and easier to move closer to your face. Depending on the style of your dressing table, you might opt for a sleek contemporary design or choose something more ornate for a glamorous touch.

Glow with good lighting

St. Ives dressing table | @byrne_ourforeverhome

Great lighting is an essential part of any dressing table space, as you’ll want something that’s both flattering and practical. Avoid harsh light from above or below, as it can cause shadows. While natural light will always be your best friend when it comes to any make-up application, it’s not always available, whether you’re getting ready in the early morning before the sun comes up in winter, or in the evenings for date night. In these cases, consider creating a Hollywood-style dressing table with an illuminated mirror to ensure perfect lighting

Add a personal touch

Newton dressing table | Bette chair

And finally, add a few homely accents to your dressing table. Jewellery boxes and ring storage, perfume bottles on trays and catch-all bowls for your everyday pieces will create a beautifully curated space that can become a lovely focal point in your room. Complete the look with a scented candle and a small bouquet of dried flowers to make your space feel extra special.

No matter what style you decide to go for, be sure to check out our huge selection of dressing tables, stools and mirrors.

With comfort and cosiness now a top priority in our homes, the Malvern sofa has taken TikTok by storm, thanks to influencer @fernoxleybrowning. Celebrated for its versatile modular design, comfy cushions, and timeless appeal, you’ll find it’s the ideal sofa for cosy movie nights, morning coffees, hanging out with friends, or just generally unwinding with a good book. Think soft, sumptuous style you can really sink into, just bliss!

Whether you’re looking to create a cosy corner or make a bolder statement, here’s how you can style this sofa to suit your aesthetic.

1. Create a cosy corner

Malvern 3 seat corner sofa | @terracetwentythree

To transform your Malvern sofa into the ultimate cosy zone, focus on layering textures. Begin with a soft, oversized throw draped over the armrest or back of the sofa. Choose cushions in a mix of fabrics — think velvet, wool, and faux fur to add depth and warmth. Consider adding a small side table or console table to hold your favourite book and a cup of tea. Position a floor lamp with a warm, ambient glow beside the sofa to create a snug, inviting space. The modular sofa design allows you to rearrange pieces to fit perfectly into any corner, making it an intimate retreat.

2. Make it modern

A coffee table and sofa-living room furniture-wooden coffee table painted neutral-neutral walls-neutral 2-seater sofa

Malvern 2-seater sofa | Henley coffee table

The Malvern sofa is perfect for achieving a modern farmhouse look. Start by selecting the neutral-toned version of the sofa — think soft greys or beige. Pair it with wooden accents, such as a wooden coffee table or a rustic sideboard. Add cushions in natural fabrics like linen or cotton, and finish with a chunky knit throw blanket. Incorporate greenery, such as a potted fiddle leaf fig, to bring the outdoors inside. The key is blending rustic charm with modern comfort, to create a space that feels warm yet sophisticated.

3. Keep it classic

Malvern 4 seat corner sofa | @budgethomeinterior_

This sofa’s timeless design makes it easy to keep things classic. Stick to a soft, neutral colour scheme with beiges, creams, and greys. Complement the sofa with classic furniture like a tufted ottoman or a traditional coffee table.

Use soft, elegant fabrics such as silk, velvet, or linen for cushions and curtains. Add a few well-chosen accessories like a ceramic vase, a traditional mirror, and a subtle rug, to complete the look. This style is all about understated elegance and comfort.

4. Frame with colour

Malvern 4 seat corner sofa | @lifeatourabode

The neutral side of the Malvern sofa’s fabric choices provide the perfect canvas for experimenting with colour. Surround your sofa with bold artwork, vibrant cushions, or colour-drenched walls. Choose a colour palette that reflects your personality — whether it’s calming blues and greens or vibrant oranges and pinks. Incorporate accessories like vases, picture frames, and lampshades in complementary tones. This approach allows the sofa to remain the centrepiece while infusing the room with energy and character.

5. Embrace the dark side

For a statement style, consider selecting the Malvern sofa in rich, moody tones. Opt for the sofa in charcoal or brown fabric, and pair it with dark wood or painted living room furniture and lighter accessories to lift the look.

A marble coffee table or a set of sleek, dark nest of tables can elevate the aesthetic. Add depth with opulent cushions and include statement lighting to enhance the ambience. This style exudes sophistication and is perfect for creating a stylish, modern living space.

6. Introduce pattern

A corner sofa and footstool-living room furniture-cream corner sofa-matching storage footstool

If you want to add a touch of personality to your living room, introducing patterns is a great way to do so. Start with patterned cushions or throws featuring designs such as florals, geometric shapes, or even animal prints that contrast with the sofa’s solid colour. A patterned rug beneath the sofa can also anchor the space and add visual interest. Consider wallpapering a feature wall behind the sofa with a bold print that ties the room together. When mixing patterns, stick to a consistent colour palette to avoid overwhelming the space, and let the Malvern sofa be the grounding element that ties it all together.

7. Add an armchair

Enhance your seating arrangement by pairing the sofa with the Malvern swivel armchair. This curved style beautifully complements the sofa’s plump shape and adds additional seating options to the room.

Malvern armchair | @thedalleyedit

For a cohesive look, opt for the armchair in the same colour or a similar tone. If your sofa is neutral, a bold-coloured accent chair can become the room’s focal point. Place the armchair opposite the sofa to create a conversational layout, ideal for entertaining guests or relaxing with family.

By following these interior design tips, the Malvern sofa can be the centrepiece of any living room, no matter your design preferences. Share your sofa styling with us on Instagram and tag #OakFurnitureland #GrowYourHome.

Surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a meal together is one of life’s most enjoyable experiences. While the formality of dining rooms has shifted over the years, sitting at a dining table and enjoying the company of those around you remains a tradition that many of us still love. Whether it’s a simple meal with your other half and your children or inviting friends around for a relaxed dinner party.

The comfort level of your dining chairs is something you will want to consider when choosing which style to purchase. If you use your dining table for more than just quick meals – perhaps it serves as a makeshift office when you work from home or it’s the place the kids do their homework each evening – then you’ll want to ensure your chairs are comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time.

You’ll also want to consider the seating’s durability. Since we typically eat and drink while sitting on our dining room chairs, they are more prone to stains, and as part of daily family life, need to be robust.

So, what factors do you need to consider when choosing the right chair for your needs? Read on to find out what you need to know when choosing the right upholstery for your dining chairs.

What is upholstery?

Otis chair | Oliver console table

To start off, what do we mean by an upholstered dining chair? Usually, this refers to the materials that make up the soft coverings of a chair, which often include the fabric, padding, webbing, and springs. While these internal materials are generally covered and unseen, they make a big difference in whether your dining chair will provide the comfort and support you’re looking for.
The outer visible fabric can be changed years down the line, whether that’s due to wear and tear or simply for a change in style. However, the inner support layers will ensure your chair is built to last. So, with this in mind, you’ll want to look for high-quality materials when making your choice.

Choosing the right fabrics

Harper chair | Henley dining table

It’s important to consider how much and who will be using your dining room chairs, as these factors will play a big role in which fabrics will have staying power.

Many materials age over time, so you’ll want to consider not just how they look when purchased new, but also how they will look years down the line after many uses. For example, leather is easy to look after but will develop a natural patina over time. If your dining room has a sunny window, be aware that some fabrics may fade when exposed to sunlight.

Choosing the right colours

Isla chair | @alicerosehome

When considering which colours to choose for your dining chairs, most of us will simply want them to work well with colours already used in the room. However, because dining chairs tend to be a bigger investment piece, especially since they are usually purchased in multiples, you may want to consider a more neutral shade. This can give you flexibility in the future, should you decide to redecorate.

What’s the Martindale rub test and why should it matter?

Bette chair | Parquet dining table

Most fabrics are graded using the Martindale rub test, which is a unit for quantifying the abrasion resistance of textiles, especially when used in upholstery. The test stimulates the natural wear of a seat cover by rubbing the textile sample against a standard abrasive surface with a specified force.

Commercial grade fabrics are usually rated at 100,000 to 250,000 double-rubs. whereas residential use fabrics fall between 10,000 to 25,000 double-rubs. Essentially, the higher the Martindale unit of your fabric, the more wear and tear it will be able to withstand.

The best upholstery for homes with kids and pets

Durham dining table set | @at_my_surrey_chalet

For a busy family life or homes with pets, you’ll want to pay greater attention to the fabric you use. While a velvet fabric or vintage silk chair seat may look stunning, constant use may make it an impractical choice long-term. Avoid delicate fabrics that can easily pull and mark. Instead, look for new materials on the market that are more robust and stain-resistant. Consider slip-covered dining chairs, which will allow you to easily launder any stains regularly, or opt for leather, as it’s easy to wipe down and refresh your chairs.

Are you gearing up to decorate and furnish your new home? It’s an exciting journey, but it can also be overwhelming with countless decisions to make and styles to choose from. Whether you’re dreaming of a cosy minimalist space or a vibrant eclectic haven, we’re thrilled to introduce our featured guest, Maxine Brady, a renowned interior stylist known for her keen eye for colour, pattern, and knack for transforming spaces into stunning, liveable works of art. With years of experience and a portfolio brimming with beautiful designs, Maxine is here to share her expert advice.

In this Q&A, Maxine provides invaluable tips and insights on everything from selecting the perfect colour palette to finding the right furniture that fits your style and budget. Get ready to be inspired and equipped with the knowledge you need to create a home that truly reflects your personality and meets your needs.

So, let’s dive in and start transforming your first home into a place you’ll love!

Can you tell us a bit about your interiors background?

Maxine Brady

My journey to becoming an interior stylist began over 25 years ago! My first job after university was working on a home and lifestyle magazine. I worked my way up and landed my dream job on the style desk at House Beautiful Magazine. I spent five years there styling monthly cover shoots and lifestyle features. This experience allowed me to work with some incredible designers, learn the ropes of the magazine industry, and gain lots of experience styling photo shoots both in the UK and abroad.

Since going freelance, I’ve styled and produced interior design shoots for high street brands, independent shops, small boutiques, designer hotels, interior designers, luxury brands, and TV shows. I’ve turned my hand to many things, including launching my award-winning blog, maxinebrady.com, in 2016, and more recently, a podcast called How to Home (which is trending on Spotify). I’ve also had regular slots presenting on TV for This Morning, BBC Good Morning, and a C5 TV show.

Over the years, I’ve honed my skills and expertise, and developed a keen eye
for spotting trends before they happen. I love being an expert in my field and pride myself on creating inviting and approachable interiors for my clients that truly feel like home.

How would you describe your own interior style?

Maxine Brady

My interior style is ‘eclectic-disco with a splash of adventure’ thrown in! I love mixing patterns and colours in my home, inspired by my travels. I’m a magpie for interior trends, colours, and designs, and I enjoy being innovative — sourcing items for my home from unexpected places. It’s where I test my design ideas and I’ve packed my place with vintage finds and personal treasures.

I’m a real homebody (that’s my Taurus star sign coming through strong). For me, home is all about creating a space that feels curated yet comfortable, inspirational, and also where I can recharge! I’ve filled my tiny terrace house with pattern tiles, soft textures, and a simple colour palette. I believe that adding
unique touches make a space feel lived-in and loved.

What’s the first thing you’d recommend doing when moving into a new home?

Maxine Brady

Take a step back and get a feel for your space. Spend time in your new home and think about how you want each room to function and what purpose it will serve.

You’ll also want to note how the light changes throughout the day as this will impact what paint colours you use. All this research will give you a solid foundation for decision-making around layout, colour schemes, and decor. It’s very tempting to rush ahead as soon as you move in as it’s exciting to decorate a new home, but you’ll find that once you have settled into a place, you’ll want to use it differently to how you expected. This will influence how you decorate and furnish it.

Maxine Brady

Once you have a clear vision for your home, create a mood board with ideas for each space, including layout, soft furnishing, and furniture. I find Shuffles from Pinterest is a helpful mood-boarding tool.

If you want your home to look harmonious, choose a select colour palette of five colours and use them throughout your home in varying degrees to create a cohesive flow between rooms. In my space, I’ve used white, peach, baby blue, navy and grey in all the rooms to help them flow and feel cohesive.

Which room would you prioritise getting organised?

Maxine Brady

I’d prioritise the kitchen, as it’s the heart of the home and where you’ll spend a lot of time. A well-organised kitchen makes everyday tasks easier and sets a positive tone for settling into the rest of your home. Hang art on the walls, make sure everything fits, and add some colour!

What are your tips on decorating a fresh space?

Maxine Brady

Start with a neutral base and build from there. Add pops of colour (and personality) with your accessories, artwork, and textiles like cushions and throws. And don’t rush the process; let your space evolve naturally over time as you find pieces you truly love.

Where would you start with furnishing a new home?

Maxine Brady

Invest in quality pieces for the main areas — a stylish AND comfortable sofa for the living room, a sleek dining table and chairs, and a standout bed for your bedroom. These are the pieces you’ll use most often, so it’s worth spending a bit more to ensure they’re durable and timeless.

And don’t forget your window dressings! They will have a huge impact on the overall look of each room. Once you have these basics sorted, start adding accent furniture and accessories to complete the look.

What are the most fundamental pieces of furniture to get started with?

Maxine Brady

Allocate a chunk of your budget for key pieces like a sofa, bed, dining table and chairs, and storage solutions such as a dresser or a wardrobe. These are the building blocks of your home and will provide a functional and comfortable living environment. Choose designs that you LOVE and build your room scheme around them. Once you’ve invested in these essentials, you can add other pieces like coffee tables, side tables, and armchairs over time.

What budget-friendly styling tips would you recommend for slower transformations?

Maxine Brady

Focus on small changes that make a big impact. Swap out old hardware on cabinets and doors for something more modern.

Maxine Brady

Use paint to refresh walls, furniture, or even kitchen cabinets and add warmth to a room with textiles like curtains, cushions, throws, and rugs. Don’t forget about lighting — new lampshades or light fixtures can dramatically change the feel of a room without breaking the bank. I’ve covered this topic in a whole podcast episode called ‘how to modernise your dated home on a budget’ in Series 2 of How to Home, so make sure you listen for more tips.

Can you share some top tips on other ways to put your own stamp on the place?

Maxine Brady

Personalising your space is about adding items that reflect your personality and style. Display your favourite artwork, family photos, or travel souvenirs on a gallery wall. Mix in some vintage or second-hand finds to add character to your room.

Plants are another great way to breathe life into your home and make it feel more lived-in. If you’re not green-fingered, cheat with faux plants! And don’t be afraid to experiment with DIY projects — creating your own decor can be fun and rewarding.

Do you have any advice on approaching more fundamental changes to your home?

Maxine Brady

When it comes to bigger changes like renovations or major updates, planning is key. Do your research, set a realistic budget, and create a detailed plan. Don’t be
afraid to consult with professionals (like me!) as our expertise can save you time and money in the long run. Remember to stay true to your vision and make decisions you’ll be happy with for years to come.

Which Oak Furnitureland products do you think would work well to get started in a new place?

A double bed and wooden storage-bedroom furniture-upholstered double bed-marble top wooden side table-tallboy

Islington bed | Islington bedside table | Islington tallboy

Here are four pieces that balance quality, style, and functionality making them ideal starter furniture when setting up your new home.

1. The statement Islington bed will make the ideal centrepiece for your room. The winged sides will make your bedroom feel very private too!

2. The Jude sofa features a timeless mid-century design which stands the test of time. It’s a piece I would love for my own home.

3. The versatile Oliver sideboard offers a stylish storage solution that will fit into various rooms. Dark woods are very much on trend, and this design has a cool ridge effect on the doors. Again, something I would love for my house!

4. The Otis dining chair is effortlessly cool and will work as an office chair, in your bedroom or for entertaining — I love its sleek, modern design.

No matter how old you are, when September comes around it always ignites that back-to-school feeling that gives us a renewed sense of purpose. Whether you work from home full-time or do the odd days in the office, updating your work-from-home space is a simple way to reset and get yourself back into gear after the summer holidays.

If you want to upgrade your workspace, here’s some home office inspiration for making it more organised, creative, and comfortable for the ‘new work’ year.

Lay the foundations

If you’re still working off a wobbly desk or the kitchen table, then it’s time to update your workstation. We’ve got a wide selection of desks to choose from, including slim styles that suit more compact spaces to larger designs with plenty of in-built home office storage.

Tools at the ready

Small changes can have a big impact; whatever your style, sometimes just swapping your standard desk accessories for something a little more fun can make you look forward to getting back to work each morning. Home office decor details such as pens, photo frames, and notebooks, can make your desk look more cheerful without costing a fortune or taking up too much space.

Urban jungle

When you’re stuck at your desk all day, having references to nature can be the best way to connect with the outside world. Plants are the ideal low-maintenance addition to your office space, and many varieties are known for their calming properties, perfect for those more demanding days at work! Or, pop a small bunch of flowers on your desk at the start of the week to kick off your Monday with a smile.

Wonder wall

Looking at a blank wall all day can be a little uninspiring, so give it a refresh to gaze at things that spark your creativity. Use the wall as a canvas for adding pictures of things that make you happy, be it holiday snaps, prints with inspirational quotes, or some of your kids’ art for a touch of extra home office inspiration.

Painted perfection

Don’t underestimate the impact that wall colours can have on how your home office looks and feels. Choose a shade that you love and colour drench your walls, or, if you don’t want to commit to the whole room, paint the wall that you face all day in your favourite tone.

Add some accessories

A few simple touches can make your home office design feel a bit more special. A statement light is not only functional but adds visual interest too, while keeping blankets close at hand is useful for chilly days. Mirrors are also a brilliant way to add light to dark rooms through reflection.

We hope that’s given you some home office inspiration to update your workspace. If you need additional storage, browse our selection of bookcases, sideboards and home office cabinets to get organised. And finally, don’t forget to add a cosy armchair for much-deserved coffee breaks! We’d love to see how you style your home office so make sure to tag #OakFurnitureland #GrowYourHome on Instagram.
