The dining table is the heart of the home, a place where family and friends come together to connect. But in today’s busy world, mealtimes are often rushed, distracted, or skipped altogether.

Food writer and cook Melissa Hemsley knows just how powerful the ritual of eating together can be. Growing up, she experienced mealtimes as more than just food; they were about togetherness and community.

She recalls late-night dinners with her army dad, where even ten minutes together in pyjamas felt grounding. Fridays in her childhood home were filled with her mum’s friends cooking together, sharing laughter, and making sure no one left empty-handed. These moments taught her that the table is about connection first, and what’s on the plate second.

With that spirit in mind, Melissa shares five simple, practical tips to help you create calmer, more meaningful mealtimes.

1. Get everyone involved from the start

Source: Melissa Hemsley

“The ritual begins before anyone sits down, from laying the table to putting out some simple nibbles like chopped veggies and a dip. When everyone plays a small part, it turns the meal into something lovely you’ve created together, rather than a job that falls to one person. I always say busy hands make for happy hearts, and when people are chopping, pouring, or carrying plates, they’re already engaging and preparing to spend time together.”

2. Make a family meal plan

A larder-kitchen diner furniture-open plan living-wooden larder storing food and drink-shelves with crockery-cook books-house plant-wooden chair

Romsey larder | @countrysidecottagediary

“Once a week, sit down as a family and sketch out a rough meal plan. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just ideas everyone can pitch in on. It helps with budgeting, reduces stress after a long day, and makes everyone feel invested in what’s coming to the table. When people have had a say in what’s being cooked, they’re more likely to look forward to it and enjoy eating it together.”

3. Create a calming dining environment

Bentley dining table | Bentley bench | Kingham chairs | Belgrave display cabinet

“Phones, laptops, even the dog begging under the table can all distract from what should be your moment to connect. Instead of strict bans that can cause more stress, gently set things aside and focus on creating a pleasant atmosphere. Play some gentle music, light a candle, or simply clear away the day’s clutter. A calmer table makes for happier conversation, and even better digestion.”

4. Cook once, eat twice

Source: Melissa Hemsley

“Plan meals that roll over into the next day, a curry that tastes even better reheated, or a big pot of sauce that can become pasta one night and a pie filling the next. I call these ‘leftovers on purpose’. They don’t just save money, they make life easier. After all, who doesn’t love less faff in the kitchen after a long day? Knowing you’ve got something delicious ready to go makes you more likely to sit down together again, rather than grabbing something separately or skipping dinner altogether.”

5. Eat a little earlier

A dining table, chairs, and dresser-dining room furniture-vintage patterned rug-pale oak dining table-upholstered dining chairs-large blue dresser-colourful tablescape-fruit-checkerboard napkins-twisted candles-neutral table runner-fresh flowers

Oaklee dining table | Otis chairs | Richmond dresser

“Bringing mealtimes forward, even slightly, means everyone arrives at the table with more energy and time to unwind afterwards. It’s about flexibility and finding the time that works for your family’s stage of life, but eating earlier can make the evening feel calmer and less rushed.”

Melissa’s stories remind us that mealtimes are about more than food; they’re about connection, comfort, and community. By creating small rituals, planning ahead, and making your dining space inviting, you can turn everyday meals into meaningful moments.

At Oak Furnitureland, we design dining tables and chairs built for real life, from midweek suppers to big Sunday gatherings. Because when the table feels special, the moments around it do too.

How many times have you walked into a restaurant or bar and caught a glimpse of what appeared to be another room, only to realise it was a cleverly placed mirror reflecting the space behind you? That’s the magic of mirrors — they create illusions, add depth, and transform a space with ease.

Mirrors have long been a favourite trick of interior designers. They bounce light around a room, create the illusion of extra space, and add an instant touch of elegance. But beyond simply hanging one on the wall, there are so many clever ways to use mirrors in your home.

With lighter days around the corner, why not get your home spring-summer ready and make the most of mirrors in new and exciting ways? Here are some clever ideas to get you started, from simple accents to dramatic statement pieces.

1. Light it up

Newton mirror | @houseofhetheringtons

One of the easiest ways to maximise a mirror’s impact is to place it near a light or lamp. In the evening, the soft glow is reflected, creating a warm and inviting ambience throughout the room. This trick works especially well in small or dimly lit spaces.

2. Alcove accents

Make the most of those tricky alcove spaces by lining them with mirrors. This is a great solution for darker areas with little natural light. Simply placing a small table and a lamp in front of a mirrored alcove can create a beautiful, light-enhancing reflection. For a traditional touch, choose antiqued glass, or opt for a sleek, polished finish for a contemporary feel.

3. Faux window effect

Payton mirror | @serenenumber18

If your space lacks natural light, a well-placed wall mirror can make a big difference. A large, framed mirror can mimic the look of a window, reflecting available light and visually expanding the space. Similarly, a contrasting frame colour can enhance the illusion, making it feel like a second window in the room.

4. Over the fireplace

Newton mirror | Newton chest of drawers

A classic yet effective way to use a mirror is to place one above the mantelpiece. This not only enhances the height of the room but also reflects light and draws attention to a key focal point in your living space.

5. Brighten the hallway

Serena mirror | @farmhouse_by_the_brook

Hallways are often narrow and dimly lit, making them the perfect place for mirrors. A long mirror down a hallway wall can create the illusion of more space and bounce light around to make the area feel more open and inviting.

6. Dressing table effect

Burleigh mirror | Burleigh chest of drawers | @thelightshesees

Transform a simple set of drawers into a chic dressing table by leaning a mirror on top or wall-mounting a mirror above. This adds an elegant yet practical touch to a bedroom or dressing area, maximising both storage and style.

7. Floor-standing mirror

Payton mirror | @budgethomeinterior_

For a dramatic effect, consider adding a floor-standing mirror in your bedroom or living area. It not only makes the space feel larger but also brings a modern, sophisticated touch to the room.

8. Clever corner mirror

A neutral bedroom corner-natural wood chest of drawers-floor standing arch mirror-candle-tray-books-vase of fresh flowers-potted house plant-neutral curtains-wooden floor

Newton chest of drawers | @no14hectorshouse

For an unexpected way to maximise space, try placing a mirror in a corner. This creates depth and helps to reflect different angles of the room, making it feel more expansive. It’s especially effective in small rooms, adding a sense of openness and light.

9. Statement mirror as art

Aurora mirror | Original Rustic chest of drawers

A beautifully designed mirror can serve as a piece of art and a focal point in any room. Whether it’s an ornate vintage piece, a sculptural modern design, or a uniquely shaped mirror, placing it in a prominent position can enhance the aesthetic of your space while reflecting light and depth. Try a large wall mirror above a console table, in an entrance or as a centrepiece in a living room to create a striking visual impact.

10. Mirrored wall

Photo by Chantal Garnier on Unsplash

For the ultimate wow factor, why not create an entire mirrored wall? Whether you use full-length panels or design an eclectic geometric arrangement, a mirror-clad wall instantly makes a space feel grand and luxurious. This look works particularly well in dining rooms and living areas where you want to amplify light and create a sense of grandeur.

11. Vintage mirror gallery wall

Why settle for just one mirror when you can create a whole gallery? Group a collection of vintage or decorative wall mirrors together for a striking display. Sourced from flea markets, second-hand shops, or online marketplaces, a mix of different shapes and styles adds charm and character to any room.

12. Add a mirrored tray

Credit: Sena on Pexels

For a unique touch, repurpose a small-paned mirror as a tray for your coffee table. It adds depth and interest while reflecting decorative objects placed on top. Try arranging candles on the tray to amplify their flickering glow and create a cosy ambience.

Mirrors are one of the easiest and most effective ways to enhance your home’s interior. Whether you’re using them to brighten up a dark space, add decorative flair, or create the illusion of more room, there are countless ways to get creative. Surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a meal together is one of life’s most enjoyable experiences. While the formality of dining rooms has shifted over the years, sitting at a dining table and enjoying the company of those around you remains a tradition that many of us still love. Whether it’s a simple meal with your other half and your children or inviting friends around for a relaxed dinner party.

The comfort level of your dining chairs is something you will want to consider when choosing which style to purchase. If you use your dining table for more than just quick meals – perhaps it serves as a makeshift office when you work from home or it’s the place the kids do their homework each evening – then you’ll want to ensure your chairs are comfortable to sit in for extended periods of time.

You’ll also want to consider the seating’s durability. Since we typically eat and drink while sitting on our dining room chairs, they are more prone to stains, and as part of daily family life, need to be robust.

So, what factors do you need to consider when choosing the right chair for your needs? Read on to find out what you need to know when choosing the right upholstery for your dining chairs.

What is upholstery?

Otis chair | Oliver console table

To start off, what do we mean by an upholstered dining chair? Usually, this refers to the materials that make up the soft coverings of a chair, which often include the fabric, padding, webbing, and springs. While these internal materials are generally covered and unseen, they make a big difference in whether your dining chair will provide the comfort and support you’re looking for.
The outer visible fabric can be changed years down the line, whether that’s due to wear and tear or simply for a change in style. However, the inner support layers will ensure your chair is built to last. So, with this in mind, you’ll want to look for high-quality materials when making your choice.

Choosing the right fabrics

Harper chair | Henley dining table

It’s important to consider how much and who will be using your dining room chairs, as these factors will play a big role in which fabrics will have staying power.

Many materials age over time, so you’ll want to consider not just how they look when purchased new, but also how they will look years down the line after many uses. For example, leather is easy to look after but will develop a natural patina over time. If your dining room has a sunny window, be aware that some fabrics may fade when exposed to sunlight.

Choosing the right colours

Isla chair | @alicerosehome

When considering which colours to choose for your dining chairs, most of us will simply want them to work well with colours already used in the room. However, because dining chairs tend to be a bigger investment piece, especially since they are usually purchased in multiples, you may want to consider a more neutral shade. This can give you flexibility in the future, should you decide to redecorate.

What’s the Martindale rub test and why should it matter?

Bette chair | Parquet dining table

Most fabrics are graded using the Martindale rub test, which is a unit for quantifying the abrasion resistance of textiles, especially when used in upholstery. The test stimulates the natural wear of a seat cover by rubbing the textile sample against a standard abrasive surface with a specified force.

Commercial grade fabrics are usually rated at 100,000 to 250,000 double-rubs. whereas residential use fabrics fall between 10,000 to 25,000 double-rubs. Essentially, the higher the Martindale unit of your fabric, the more wear and tear it will be able to withstand.

The best upholstery for homes with kids and pets

Durham dining table set | @at_my_surrey_chalet

For a busy family life or homes with pets, you’ll want to pay greater attention to the fabric you use. While a velvet fabric or vintage silk chair seat may look stunning, constant use may make it an impractical choice long-term. Avoid delicate fabrics that can easily pull and mark. Instead, look for new materials on the market that are more robust and stain-resistant. Consider slip-covered dining chairs, which will allow you to easily launder any stains regularly, or opt for leather, as it’s easy to wipe down and refresh your chairs.

With the growing trend of rich, earthy brown interiors, dark wooden furniture emerges as the ideal choice to infuse character into your space.

Dark wood pieces work well throughout the house. Whether your home is period, classical, modern or contemporary, this style can be dressed up or down depending on your choice of accessories. Imagine walls and homewares in coffee, cocoa, and caramel tones perfectly complementing our darker wooden cabinetry collections such as Oliver, Madison, Detroit, and Islington. This cosy, indulgent aesthetic seamlessly combines with lighter oak furniture, creating an intriguing contrast.

Here are some impressive ways to make dark-toned furniture look beautiful in your home.

Make a dark furniture statement

Oliver dining table with Otis chairs | Oliver sideboard

The resurgence of mid-century style has ushered in a preference for darker, moodier pieces that can enhance the warmth of a room and create a cosy, inspiring and relaxing space. There’s a certain elegance that only dark wood furniture can capture, thanks to its rich and welcoming tones, so try matching your dining table to your sideboard to add real depth and create impact.

Madison double bed | Madison bedside table | Madison wardrobe | Isabella accent chair | Immersed wall art

Dark wood bedroom furniture, such as the pieces from the Madison collection, adds texture to the bedroom, especially when enhanced by accent colours and soft fabrics. Depending on the choice of wall colour and ornaments, bedside tables and wardrobes in dark wood, along with other statement pieces, create a rich and romantic feel.

The softer approach

Islington sideboard

Alternatively, you can soften the look of dark wooden pieces while still creating a cosy, snug style by incorporating other deep colours into the room, whether on your walls, through upholstered furniture, or with extra little accessories. Opt for shades such as chalky grey-greens and deep muddy blues, which work particularly well with this style of furniture.

Mix and match

Oliver console table

Light wood has undeniable popularity, so it’s likely that you already have some neutral pieces in your home. Add a few pieces of dark wood furniture with fluted detailing among these lighter pieces to create an interesting contrast between light and dark, adding plenty of wow factor.

Detroit dark wood sideboard
Detroit large sideboard

Embrace a mix-and-match approach, adding dark wood that will work well with other elements in your room. Consider adding a single bookcase to an alcove, choosing a dining table set with slightly different chairs, or selecting a sideboard to enhance your living or dining room with an eclectic look and much-needed storage.

Somewhere in the middle

Hercules dining table with chairs | Hercules sideboard | Scroll back dining chair

If you’d like to layer your look and start with something a bit lighter, there are plenty of shades of dark wood furniture. If you prefer something with a subtle dark stain, you’ll love our Hercules range. The pieces, such as the dining table or sideboard, are versatile and can complement a number of different colour schemes.

Original Rustic chest of drawers

Along with the Hercules range, the French Farmhouse and Original Rustic collections are all slightly lighter in tone but still retain timeless style. From new builds to country cottages, these ranges will fit effortlessly into your home.

Elba TV unit | Seymour sofa | Seymour footstool

Perhaps you prefer a furniture style which looks a bit more contemporary, choose pieces with sleek silhouettes, modern detailing, and even mixed materials like acacia and marble.

While medium dark woods tend to add textured tones to your home, all dark wood furniture creates a bold statement, creating luxurious contrasts and accentuating any home accessories.

With peak bank holiday decorating season on the horizon, we delve into the world of home transformation with renowned colour and paint expert, Marianne Shillingford. From quick decorating hacks to uncovering your ideal colour scheme and finish, to unravelling the inspiration behind Dulux’s colour of the year, dive into our exclusive conversation for insightful decor revelations. Keep on scrolling to discover more.

Can you tell us a bit about your interiors background?

Dulux

I started my working life as a fairground artist and signwriter but when I started having children I went back to college and turned my attention to learning how to decorate the great indoors.

For the next 25 years, I ran my own interior design and decoration business working with extraordinary craftspeople and specialising in colour, fine finishes and mural work.

Colour and paint have always been at the heart of my passion and expertise, so this chapter of my life as the Creative Director of Dulux is a complete dream job.

How would you describe your interior design style?

Dulux | Sweet Embrace | Copper Glow | Winter Pumpkin

My style is fun, colourful, infused with storytelling and full of surprises.

What’s your advice for choosing the perfect wall colour?

Dulux | Guild Green | Frosted Papaya | Rock Salt

Start with something that you absolutely love, from a piece of furniture to a cushion, artwork, towel or rug. Use the colour picker in the free Dulux Visualiser app to pick out your favourite colours then check out how they look on the wall through the app. Order samples of only the ones that made you smile and try them out before you buy all the paint.

What’s the best way to select the right paint finish?

Dulux | Boathouse Blue | Pugin Red

For walls, choose a durable matt finish like Dulux Easycare or luxurious Dulux Heritage velvet matt. It makes all colours look beautiful, hides the odd imperfection, resists dirt and will stand up to the real life you lead.

If you are short of time and want instant coverage for your walls, choose Simply Refresh, which is a rich and creamy one-coat matt emulsion.

For woodwork, furniture, kitchen cabinets and radiators you will need a tough, fast-drying finish in gloss, satin or eggshell. Gloss looks fabulous on really smooth, well-prepared surfaces but can highlight imperfections if you haven’t done the prep. A Satin or Satinwood finish is semi-matt (a bit like highly polished wood) so it’s much more practical to apply and maintain but still offers a nice bit of reflective shine. An eggshell finish is exactly like the shell of an egg and it’s the closest thing to a matt finish without being quite so flat. It has a traditional premium look that lends itself perfectly to colour-drenching effects where you paint everything in the room the same colour.

Try Dulux Heritage velvet eggshell, Dulux Quick Drying eggshell or Simply Refresh Multi Surface which has a built-in primer and undercoat. All of these Dulux paints are solvent-free and quick-drying.

How do you decorate on a budget?

Decorating on a budget means ensuring that every last drop you pay for gets used up. Calculate exactly how much paint you need before buying it, by taking measurements of the room and using the paint calculator on the Dulux website to help you.

Sounds daft, but buy the best paint you can afford, cheap paint takes more coats and won’t be very durable or long-lasting. So you will end up using twice as much to finish the job, and you’ll find yourself redecorating sooner than you’d like.

Borrow brushes, rollers and dust sheets from friends and if you are buying yourself, keep a keen eye out for the best quality kit you can afford, then look after it well so you can use it again and again in the future.

What are the easiest ways to transform a space with paint?

Lars chair | Dulux | Village Maze | White Mist

Revitalise old furniture and kitchen cabinets with a fresh lick of gorgeous colour, add colour to the ceiling, paint the skirting boards and doors in a bold colour rather than the walls, and try painting bands, blocks and big circles of colour as features in a room rather than just one wall.

What’s the best way to approach bank holiday decorating?

Take a deep breath and plan well in advance. Rather than wasting precious bank holiday time at the DIY store, buy everything you need in the weeks before so you have everything to hand when you want to get cracking.

What are your top tips for decorating with a short window of time?

Make sure the room is ready to go. Most of the work in decorating doesn’t involve applying paint, it’s the prep that takes the time – but it’s also the prep that makes the job go smoothly. Before you even think about opening a paint can, make sure your furniture is out of the way and protected, curtains and blinds are tied back or removed, floors are clean and dust sheets are down.

Clean painted woodwork with sugar soap, fill and sand down any holes in the walls and woodwork and mask off anything that needs masking off.

Make sure you have plenty of tea and bickies to hand and off you go!

Can you tell us about Dulux 2024 Colour of the Year?

Dulux | Sweet Embrace | Pea Shoot | Nordic Hills

Dulux Colour of the Year 2024 is called Sweet Embrace. It’s a very delicate grown-up blush pink that adds a subtle warming effect to a room and works with all other colours, especially cool colours like blues and greens. It’s the visual equivalent of getting a hug from a good friend and it’s both delightful and dependable in any situation.

Which Oak Furnitureland products do you think would work well with Sweet Embrace?

It’s hard to choose from so many lovely ranges but if I had to pick, I would say that teamed with the urban cool and stylish Elba range, it would look chic and modern, and with the Durham collection, it would take on a softer and more romantic look.

It’s easy to see why people love the transition to warmer seasons – trees are bursting into life, flowers are in bloom, lambs are frolicking in fields and the days are finally getting lighter and longer. Moods seem instantly lifted with the welcoming of brighter skies, and new opportunities are hanging in the air, particularly when it comes to home decor.

If you’re ready to embrace the new season in your home, we’ve rounded up our favourite ways, both big and small, to brighten up your home ready for spring and the summer months ahead.

1. Add some beautiful blooms

Stanmore 3-seater sofa | @samanthajoyhome

Bring the outdoors in with a stylish new vase and some fresh seasonal flowers such as daffodils, hyacinths or tulips in spring and peonies, dahlias or sweet peas for summer. If you need some inspiration, check out our blog on styling with flowers.

2. Spruce up your hallway

Patterned tiled hallway with dark blue walls featuring the St. Ives grey painted hallway unit with shoe storage and coat hooks.

Swap your wintery boots and cosy coats for new season alternatives, but don’t forget to keep your wellies and brollies to hand in case of those surprise showers!

3. Wake up your walls

Morgan sofa | @home_of_ivy

We’re all guilty of having endless photos on our phones, so why not make now your time to print off some pictures to frame? You can create a personalised gallery wall with favourite family snaps, or simply make a statement with single larger frames.

Hope wall art | Langham table lamp | @layered.home

If you want to add personality to your home then artwork is one of the best ways to make an instant impact. When choosing your wall art, go for a statement piece that ties in with the other colours in your room, or team several prints in similar colour palettes to unify the look.

4. Add lighter accessories

Swap around your soft furnishings to add slightly lighter touches to your home, but you might want to keep a blanket to hand for those occasional chilly evenings.

5. Swap your curtains

Take down your heavy curtains and swap for a sheer, lightweight alternative that’s more suitable for the warmer weather and lets in the light.

6. Give your bedding a refresh

There’s nothing nicer than slipping into fresh bedding. It’s almost time to dig out your lighter duvet and treat your bed to a new set of sheets. There are lots of brands offering luxurious bedding, with some of our favourites including beddable, Christy and the Secret Linen Store.

Exchange heavy blankets for lighter throws for a simple way to refresh your bedroom style.

7. Switch up your space

10. Get things organised

11. Moodboard your next project

Give yourself something to look forward to. It could be adding some new colourful accessories or even taking the time to create a Pinterest board or moodboard to help you re-decorate a room or two.

12. Pick up a paint brush

Add that feeling of renewal to your home with a fresh lick of paint. If you’d rather not commit to changing all of your walls, try painting a door or the skirting to add interest to the space.

Decorating with earthy colours https://www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/blog/inspiration-station/decorating-with-earthy-colours/ Mon, 21 Aug 2023 12:47:45 +0000 https://www.oakfurnitureland.co.uk/blog/?p=19883 Whether you want to completely redecorate or simply want a little refresh, earthy colours combine with virtually any interior style for a beautifully down-to-earth aesthetic.

The post Decorating with earthy colours appeared first on Oak Furnitureland Blog.

Bringing the colours of nature indoors often has a restorative effect on our well-being. Surrounding ourselves with a natural palette can create a calm and peaceful feeling in our homes so it’s no surprise that greens and other earthy tones have rocketed in popularity in recent years.

Whether you want to completely redecorate or simply add a few russet, tan or leafy green accents, these colours combine with virtually any interior style for a beautifully down-to-earth aesthetic.

How do you decorate with earthy tones?

Cream Oak Furnitureland Ashby sofa in an olive green living room with neutral accents.

Ashby sofa | @ourruralnest

An earth-tone palette is a versatile choice for interiors but it’s easy to get bogged down with muddy colours. The trick is to maintain visual interest by layering shades, utilising natural elements such as light, plants, oak furniture and, where appropriate, injections of colour.

Earthy wall colours

New neutrals

Oak Furnitureland Burleigh weathered oak bedside table in a muted bedroom with wall panels.

While grey has had a stronghold on decor trends for the last decade, beige and taupe shades are now becoming much more prevalent, creating a warmer and cosier look that works well with earthy colours. Here are some of our favourite neutrals and colour combinations:

  • Cooler beiges often incorporate subtle touches of grey
  • Clean whites balanced out by warm browns or deep oceanic hues
  • Ultra-rich greens, such as forest shades and emeralds, contrasted with charcoal
  • Mushroom shades and smokey hues

Sunset shades

If you’d love to add a few touches of bolder colour to your interiors, then look no further than a picture perfect sunset. You want your room to be warm and engaging without overwhelming the senses, so we recommend the following sun-soaked shades for a contemporary take on pastels:

  • Fruity peaches and tangerines for a friendly feel, dipping into pumpkin colours for a bit of depth
  • Pops of cream and blush prevent a washed-out look
  • Ochres and rusts are the ideal companion to rustic oak furniture
  • Lovely lilacs are perfect if you want just a hint of pastel tones

Bright and saturated earthy colours

If you’re looking to energise your home, bring in bold saturated colours that give your room a vibrant aesthetic. Selecting shades with warm undertones means they mix and match well together and shine when they’re stand-alone, such as against neutral walls or grey sofas. Here are the colours we’re drawn to:

  • Daring reds, particularly when paired with brown leather sofas
  • Tans, terracottas and mustards – the classic earthy look
  • Burnt oranges contrasted with onyx or velvety blues
  • Industrial metals such as brass accenting or shots of gold

Natural touches

Parquet bedside tables | @home_at_hawthorn

Leafy houseplants are known for their restorative and air-cleaning properties and marry with just about every interior style. Consider accessories in textures that can be utilised in any interior scheme, no matter your taste. These organic colours will make you fall in love with earth-tone decor:

  • Stone, wood, sand or shell tones are the go-to
  • Colours that balance warm and homely while keeping light and bright, such as honey hues or crisp whites
  • Taupes, mossy greens and chocolate browns will enrich your interiors
  • Think cottagecore, but without the frills

Earth-tone decor

There’s an earthy design scheme fit for every room of your home…

Earthy colours for the living room

If you like the idea of keeping your walls neutral, opt for a statement piece of art that brings in earthy tones. The green, mustard and brown tones of our Hope wall art can add an instant injection of cheerful colour to otherwise muted schemes.

Earthy colours for the dining room

Living room/diner with walls painted in sage green and natural oak furniture.

Parquet large sideboard | @atnumberfourteen_

While many of us don’t have separate dining rooms these days, a nice way to create a cohesive living/dining space is to use the same colour or complementing palettes in neighbouring rooms. This rich green tone looks beautiful on the wall of the period property, with crisp white woodwork and oak furniture providing a pleasing contrast.

Earthy colours for the home office

Industrial furniture home office
Brooklyn desk | @topologyinteriors

When you think of earth tones, you might not always think of industrial furniture, but it’s all about the colours you draw from. Our Brooklyn range features plain natural oak fronts with a textural grain pattern. Paired with the silvery metal frame, you have a neutral palette at your base which you can incorporate stone-hued matte accents and those all-important luscious houseplants for an earth-toned home office.

Earthy colours for the bedroom

Mustard walls with grey velvet upholstered bed and neutral accessories.

Parquet bedside table | @home_of_roberts

Bedrooms are the primary relaxation spot in your home, so you need to be careful about overdoing it with your colour scheme. Balance a feature wall or half wall in a Tuscan-inspired statement yellow like flax or mustard, with plenty of off-whites and greys to help create that calming feel. Go deeper into this design scheme with richly glazed pieces from our popular Parquet range.

You should now be armed with the know-how to transform your home into an earthy coloured haven! We’d love to see what you come up with. Make sure to tag us on Instagram using #OakFurnitureland.

You’ve watched your new home being built from the ground up. You’ve seen the plans and chosen the fixtures. Maybe you’ve even watched the foundations being poured or the roof finished. And now the waiting is finally over, it’s time to move in, decorate and furnish your home with some beautiful new furniture.

We know you want to start putting your own stamp on your new home right away but there are a few key decorating rules to keep in mind with new builds. We spoke to experts at the NHBC (National House Building Council), and several home construction companies to pull together everything you need to know about decorating a new build and what you should and shouldn’t do!

Your home needs time to settle

Mint green panelled living room with grey Evie sofa and monochrome art on the wall.

Evie sofa | @new_build_forever_home

With all the beautiful patterned wallpapers out there, we understand why this might be on your decorating agenda, but builders recommend leaving 6-12 months between when you move in and wallpapering.

This is because new building materials, such as the timber in the walls and fresh plaster need time to dry out and it’s best if they dry out slowly. As your walls dry, you may notice small cracks forming. This is totally normal, but it may damage wallpaper, and if any additional work needs to be done by your building company, such as fixing any problems that may occur, that would also spell the end of that lovely new printed wall.

There are ways you can minimise cracking and movement from the drying process though. Try to be sparing with the central heating during your first winter in the house to allow walls and joinery to naturally expand and contract with the seasons, and open the air vents in your windows to keep a gentle flow of fresh air.

And, if you just can’t stand your white walls, you can always reach for the paint. As long as you use breathable paint, like a matt emulsion, this will not affect the drying process. Just remember to keep some paint saved for touch-ups if required.

From the floor to the ceiling

Oak Furnitureland Parquet chest of drawers in a living room with a cream accent chair and houseplants.

Parquet chest of drawers | @709_design

Painting your skirting boards? Remember that new woodwork tends to absorb a lot of paint or stain, so don’t be alarmed if your first painting doesn’t give as good a finish as you were expecting. As your home settles, later decoration will have a more even and weathered surface to take the paint and stain better. But when you do paint it, make sure you have a clean and properly prepared surface that is totally dry to start with. This will help to keep it looking its best.

And a top tip for ceilings; many new builds have a plastic compound finish which should never be sanded or washed. So if you want to embrace the painted ceilings trends, lightly brush the surface to remove any dust or cobwebs, and then you will be able to paint it gently with a few coats of emulsion to create a custom look.

Tackle the big jobs first

Neutral kitchen with Oak Furnitureland dining table and cream upholstered scroll back chairs.

Scroll back dining chairs | @amy.elizabeth.home

While it might be tempting to start with a simple job first, if you begin decorating your new home with the tougher, messier jobs, like a kitchen update, you could be saving yourself lots of hassle in the longer term. You wouldn’t want someone treading tile grout through your freshly decorated living room, or scratching a newly painted wall while bringing in a new fridge.

Perhaps consider doing garden work before laying your carpets. Newly built gardens tend to have more dirt than grass, and bringing in the patio pavers now stops them from staining a beautiful new rug!

Tackle those messy and more difficult tasks first. Then, your lovely decorated rooms are more likely to stay that way for longer!

Expect the unexpected

Oak Furnitureland Parquet desk in a peaceful home office with houseplants.

Parquet desk | @hannahcoates.design

Be diligent with your snag list, and remember, sometimes, even the professionals get it wrong. If there is something not right in your new home, and your building company needs to make a repair, they won’t redo any of the decorative work that you have done. Sometimes it’s best to wait a few months to try and uncover any hidden problems.

Additionally, before you drill into your new walls, make sure you know what’s behind them. You don’t want to puncture a cable or damage any electrical work you can’t see. You can help to establish the exact position of cables that are inside walls and flooring with a cable detector to help safeguard you from hapless DIY disasters.

What can you do to decorate a new build?

Sage green bedroom featuring the Oak Furnitureland Romsey wardrobe.

Romsey triple wardrobe | @insideours

As it turns out, quite a lot! There’s no need to put up with an empty white box while you wait for your new build home to properly settle (unless that’s your personal style!). There are plenty of decorative tasks that you can tackle straight away to help your house feel like a home.

Window dressing is a big one. Blinds and curtains are not only a great way to regulate temperature and add privacy to your space, but they’re also perfect for adding a bit of personality. There are lots of stunning styles available; velvet drapery adds a luxe feel, while a brightly patterned print can add a modern twist to a room.

Throw rugs are another fantastic way to add colour and softness to a room, and they have the added benefit of being easy to move if work needs to be done. Scatter cushions and blankets can all add that bit of wow factor to a room.

If you know you’re going to be painting or wallpapering a room in the future, or don’t want to put holes in the wall, but love art, Command hooks are a lifesaver. Sticking to walls with a gentle adhesive, they won’t damage plaster or paintwork, and they allow art to be quickly rearranged to your changing tastes, making them perfect in teen rooms for example!

Once the decorating is done, now’s the time to pick your furniture. Oak Furnitureland has pieces for the whole home, designed with longevity in mind and made from quality hardwood and upholstery. Whether you’re looking for a sofa to complete your living room, a bed to finish your sleep sanctuary or a desk for your home office, we’ve got it all.
